Eve Ensler’s Social Justice Message

Eve Ensler’s idea about social justice is not like the other messages that we’ve heard about. The other messages we’ve heard about so far are on topics of world crisis status, ones that have been a problem for decades, such as racial discrimination. However, Eve Ensler’s point she wanted to discuss was about the attempt to quiet women and their rights. She goes on to tell the stories of girls that she has encountered that have been silenced be fear, girls that have been beaten by parents, siblings, relatives, and significant others. They have lost their voice because that is what they were taught, that that was what they deserved, to show signs of weakness meant you were powerless. But then she spoke of a girl, whose father was going to sell her for some cattle and calves and blankets, she knew what her future would hold for her if that happened, and she wanted better, so she ran, for 2 days, to a safe house, where she stayed and got an education, and returned home later to show her father what she had become and to tell him he would not have to worry about providing for the family now since she had an education. The thing that Ensler has in common with the other messages we have heard about is that she is trying to find an effective way to get people to know about and bring light to a situation that many of us were unaware of before.

  1. I agree with your interpretation on Eve’s message saying that she is talking about how girls are quieted and have lost their voice because of the violent situations that they are put into. I also think its cool how Eve is trying to get her message across in a new way, “The Vagina Monologues” and talking about topics that most people avoid. This is also something that no one else we have listened to this year have done. They generally take the traditional route where Eve is taking the less traditional one.

  2. I like you view on how Ensler’s speech was different from everyone else we have read thus far. I think it is true that the social injustice that she is talking about is people are tying to quiet women and take away their emotions.
